Voula’s Offshore Cafe

Firstly I have to give props to Kyle Rancourt for recommending this place to me. I was talking about this blog with him and he mentioned a place where they serve delicious breakfast and where dreams come true. I did a little research and this place is for real. They were featured on Diners Drive Ins and Dives, a Food Network show hosted by Guy Fieri (Yes, the one with the spikey bleached hair and he wears sunglasses on the back of his head). If you haven’t seen the show, you should actually give it a shot. He goes around America showcasing great food joints that do things just a little differently. Voula’s has been in the business of serving up grub for over 25 years now. They are actually located right next door to another great pizza joint that I love called The Northlake Tavern and I never noticed Voula’s when I went get some late night pizza. This place does breakfast with a Greek twist so all of their items are amazingly tasty. Cailin, my Photographer and future wife (wow need to get used to saying that…),  and I trekked over to the Northlake area where you’ll find the original Ivars and Dale Chihuly’s Glass shop. Also this place is minutes from the UW campus.

Fairly Inviting

Luckily we got in right after the breakfast rush and we were seated immediately. It wasn’t like those semi-quick waits where you walk in and 2 minutes later you get a seat, but we walked in and they pointed to a table for us. Within seconds, a busy waitress entered our part of the cafe and asked us how we were doing and if we wanted anything to drink. So far the service was exceptional and I figured they were shooting themselves in the foot by doing all of this so early on and setting the bar high but I was mistaken. They served Tony’s Coffee (for those of you that don’t know, Tony’s coffee is the 2nd little brother of big name northwest coffee in Seattle. It’s Starbucks then Tully’s). It tasted pretty good but nothing mind blowing. We had 2 more refills of coffee while we waited and on that last one refill the food was out.

Just a side-note on coffee in Seattle. Let me be clear, Starbucks is not the best coffee in the city. That crown easily goes to all of the little shops strewn throughout the city (not in any particular order — Ladro, Vivace, Uptown, Icon – Caffe Vita, TopPot, and Fuel just to name a few). I’m no coffee connoisseur but I can definitely taste the difference.

Before we left our house we read a couple reviews and the majority of people agreed that the food was brilliant but that their only negative was the wait time on food. This of course was on my mind the entire time but I came to realize how it is actually true. This cafe is a family owned business that has a kitchen that is less than 100sqft with 4 cooks. The quality of the food trumps the wait time by far and really when you plan to come to Voula’s it’s a fun event in which you enjoy your company. On the back of the menu we noticed it said, “If your food doesn’t coming out in 10 minutes then…..Relax!” “It may take 20 minutes or even 30 minutes but the quality of the food counts”. It’s one of those social concepts where if you point out your flaws people have nothing to criticize anymore. So I think telling them that they get food out slower than normal is irrelevant because they have already acknowledged it.

Smoked Pork Benedict with Chipolte Hollandaise

Smoked Salmon Scramble

Now for the food order. I got the Piñata Benedict, which was in-house Smoked Pork with poached eggs on english muffins covered in Chipotle Hollandaise sauce. Cailin got Smokey the Salmon, 3 scrambled eggs with in-house smoked Alaskan King salmon, cream cheese, and green onions. Both were served with a healthy heap of hasbrowns, say that 10x fast :)

Lets just say that for the next 5 minutes it was pure silence as we were both enjoying our meals to the fullest. Of course we shared one bite each and then continued on with our meals. The flavor on the smoked pork was unbelievable and it was one of the best benedicts I’ve ever had. I’m getting hungry again just reminiscing about this meal. Not only that, the hashbrowns were very well done and it reminded me of when my Mother would cook us hashbrowns. From what I got from Cailin and my one bite, the smoked salmon scramble was done right. It wasn’t too fish tasting but just enough to satisfy you. We were both über full and didn’t even get to finish the rest of our hashbrowns :(

The atmosphere of the cafe was very friendly and family oriented. They had 100′s of polaroid pictures up on the wall as well as some memorabilia from their visit from Guy Fieri. The absolute cherry on top was that they had Andes Mints for you when you were done with meal, WOOT!

First Breakfast Post: The Acme Cafe

I deeply hate writing. But on an even deeper level, I love it. Thats where this post comes into play. It’s Friday, it’s sunny out, I’ve just finished work, and I have a one of my favorite types of beers in hand (Mexi-Beer). It’s a pretty productive writing environment. I say this because I usually need a lot of motivation to start writing especially on nothing in particular. I’m also excited that I’m going to doing my first full fledge review this weekend, the fun part is that I’m unsure where I want to start.

Anyways, let’s get to the food! I’m here to talk about where the header picture came from and how amazing it tasted. The picture was taken in Vancouver, B.C. (thats in Canada if you didn’t know, eh). The reason we were up in Canada was because it was a surprise from my fiancée  for my birthday. Long story short she told me to get in the car and she was taking me somewhere. I figured it out about half way up but it was an awesome surprise. We went to Game 2 of the Canucks playoff game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Canucks vs Blackhawks. Game 2

The game was awesome! It was definitely back and forth and the Canucks ended up winning 4-3. Cailin had the foresight to get a hotel room right across the street from the stadium so after the game it was out to the bars for some celebration!

Okay, now to get to the juicy stuff. We wanted to get some breakfast before we headed back down to Seattle so we did some Urban Spoonage and some Yelp! and we got a list of breakfast places to go to.

Cailin reading the menu

The one that looked the tastiest and that could accommodate a wheat-free meal was the Acme Cafe. We were impressed by their online menu and website and it was walking distance from our hotel. We walked through the streets of downtown Vancouver comparing it to our hometown of Seattle and even humored the idea about buying a fun downtown loft that we could ‘getaway’ to. As we walked up we did the first impression look of the outside and decided it met our 1st impression standards and we headed for the front door. Walking in we noticed that every single table was full with people that reminded us of our local Capitol Hill folk, hipsters that knew the hotspot. Cailin and I looked around and saw the open kitchen layout that gave you the feeling of being in the kitchen with them as they cooked for you. We got some bar seats that faced the road which in my mind, only enhanced our experience. Our view is pictured below:

After some hard decisions, Cailin went with her always favorite Eggs Benedict and I went with the featured item. We were sipping on coffee commenting on the view and the bar across the street called The Country Bar, although it didn’t look too inviting. When the food came out we were pleasantly surprised. The waiter mentioned to us that they don’t have frying pans or flat tops and that they do all of their cooking in the oven. This intrigued us and so when the food came out we were surprised it worked out so well.

Cailin’s egg benedict was a classic with an oven bake twist and my dish was a red wine infused-oyster omelet with goat cheese, mushrooms, onions, and rosemary. On the side I had fruit, toast and colorful homefries. Pictures are below:

Let’s just say that we shared one maybe two bites with each other but for the most part we devoured those dishes. They were amazingly tasty with so much flavor. I never thought oven baked breakfast would taste so good but this place did it right. The coffee was spot on for not being from Seattle, but I figured British Columbia could get something right being so close to the Coffee Capital of the World. The atmosphere was really inviting and everyone was super friendly (must be Canada).

All in all, this was a great start to my birthday weekend and definitely a surprise. I love randomly stumbling on a place and finding out that it’s amazing. If we’re ever in Vancouver B.C. again for breakfast this place would be my first choice. As for ratings:
